About Essay Contest

In 2015, Harvard GlobalWE launched its annual essay contest at the Beaconhouse School in Islamabad, Pakistan. In 2016, we expanded the contest to schools in Germany and Turkey, with the goal of providing inspiration and encouragement to students who engage in topics relating to global women's rights and freedoms.

We welcome you to read essays from high school students around the world who are inspiring others to learn about and help women and girls who face daily challenges that often define their communities, but not their aspirations. We invited students to respond to the question: “What is the biggest challenge facing women and girls in your country today?”

For more information, see our Contest Overview.

Essay Contest Book

Harvard GlobalWE has published 99 winning essays from our Essay Contest from the past five years in a coffee table book. We are excited to announce that a limited number of books are available to share with individuals who donate $99 or more (for 99 essays!) to Harvard GlobalWE. Take a look at the essay contest book here. Please visit our Donate page to make a contribution and receive a copy of the book.

Our Mission

Harvard GlobalWE is a shared interest group of the Harvard Alumni Association. We are dedicated to the empowerment of women through education, dialogue and connection among individuals working for women's rights and freedoms worldwide.

Our Members

Harvard GlobalWE members span the globe, hailing from the United Arab Emirates, Pakistan, England, Canada, the USA, and beyond. The diversity of our backgrounds, genders, religions, politics, perspectives, and cultures fuels our conversations and understandings. Our commonality is our unwavering dedication to global women's empowerment: a shared commitment that has drawn us together and continues to attract Harvard alumni from around the world as well as Harvard students, staff, and affiliates.

Our Efforts

Harvard GlobalWE does not advocate a specific ideology or agenda; rather, we highlight and raise awareness about issues concerning women's empowerment worldwide, including but not limited to: education, political rights, freedom from violence, economic empowerment, and women's healthcare.

Our efforts include worldwide online screenings and discussions of documentaries and films, in-person roundtable discussions with women leaders, and the development of a network of organizations through which our members can become more actively involved in specific global women's empowerment initiatives.

We exist to empower

We empower students by providing a platform for their voices to be heard on issues regarding the rights and opportunities of women and girls around the world.
